About us and general questions

What is an Accredited Practising Dietitian (APD)?

The only nutrition professional in Australia recognised by Medicare, the Department of Veterans’ Affairs and most private health funds. APDs hold a university degree in nutrition and dietetics, complete supervised practice and maintain ongoing professional development through Dietitians Australia. Andrew Thompson, Shayan Khademi and Georgia Bates are all APDs, and Andrew also holds Monash University Low FODMAP Diet accreditation. Meet the team.

Who will I see?

Andrew Thompson, our Senior Dietitian and founder, consults at Redlands on Tuesdays, Logan on Thursdays and Ipswich on Fridays, and works with tube feeding, malnutrition, gut health and complex chronic conditions. Shayan Khademi consults at Ipswich on Mondays, with telehealth and home visits, and takes general health referrals such as heart health, type 2 diabetes and healthy ageing. Georgia Bates is our eating disorder dietitian and also works with paediatric feeding and neurodivergent clients, by telehealth Australia-wide and at the Logan clinic by appointment.

We match you to the dietitian who suits what you need and where you are, or ask for someone in particular. Online booking covers Andrew and Shayan on their clinic days; appointments with Georgia are booked by phone or enquiry form.

What is the difference between a dietitian and a nutritionist?

All APDs are nutritionists, but not all nutritionists are dietitians. Only APDs are qualified to provide medical nutrition therapy for clinical conditions like diabetes, kidney disease, IBS and tube feeding, and only APDs are recognised for Medicare rebates, DVA cards and private health fund claims.

What areas do you cover?

Home visits across Logan, Ipswich, Redlands and surrounding suburbs. Clinics in Logan (Rochedale, Thursdays), Ipswich (Silkstone, Mondays and Fridays) and the Redlands (Wellington Point, Tuesdays). Telehealth by video call Australia-wide. Contact us to check if your suburb is covered for home visits.

Do you do home visits?

Yes. They suit older adults, NDIS and NIISQ participants, DVA card holders and anyone who finds travel difficult. Scheme-funded clients (NDIS, NIISQ, DVA, My Aged Care) pay no gap for home visits; private home visits add a flat $50 travel fee within our standard service area across Logan, Ipswich and Redlands.

Do you offer telehealth?

Yes, anywhere in Australia. Telehealth is claimable through most private health funds, Medicare (with a chronic disease management plan), DVA and NDIS. You need a phone, tablet or computer with a camera and a quiet space.

Do I need a referral to see a dietitian?

Not if you’re paying privately or claiming through private health extras. A GP referral is needed for Medicare rebates through a chronic disease management plan (EPC plan) and for some DVA pathways. For NDIS, NIISQ and Support at Home, your plan or support coordinator is the starting point.

How long is a consultation?

Initial appointments are 45 minutes, or 60 minutes for complex cases (tube feeding, multiple conditions, paediatric). Reviews are 30 to 45 minutes. Home visits get the same time, plus travel.

Funding pathways

Can I see a dietitian through Medicare?

Yes, if you have a chronic health condition and your GP prepares a chronic disease management plan (also called an EPC plan or GP management plan) with a referral to a dietitian. Medicare rebates $63.40 per session on up to 5 allied health sessions per calendar year, shared across all allied health on your plan. Read the full Medicare details

Are you an NDIS provider?

We’re a non-registered NDIS provider, so we see self-managed and plan-managed participants whose plans include dietitian support under Improved Daily Living or Improved Health and Wellbeing. Read the full NDIS details

Do you accept DVA cards?

Yes. Gold Card holders are covered for any condition with a D904 referral from your GP; White Card holders are covered for accepted conditions. We bill DVA directly so there’s no out-of-pocket cost. Read the full DVA details

Can I use my Support at Home package for a dietitian?

Yes, through a third-party provider agreement. Your approved Support at Home provider arranges it with us and the cost comes from your support plan budget. This works for ongoing Support at Home classifications, the Restorative Care Pathway and the End-of-Life Pathway. Read the full Support at Home details

Can I use NIISQ funding to see a dietitian?

Yes. Speak with your NIISQ support planner about adding dietitian services to your treatment, care and support plan. We submit treatment cycle requests and work directly with your planner on appointments and billing. Read the full NIISQ details

I am a serving ADF member. Can I see you?

Yes. We are an approved provider with Bupa ADF Health Services. Ask your on-base health centre for a referral to a dietitian, and we bill Bupa ADF Health Services directly, so there is no cost to you.

Can I claim through my private health insurance?

Yes. We accept over 30 funds via Tyro Healthpoint with on-the-spot claiming, including Bupa, Medibank, nib, ahm, HCF and Defence Health. Your fund pays its portion at the appointment and you pay the gap. No referral needed. Read the full private health details

What if I just want to pay privately?

No referral or plan is needed. Standard initial appointments (45 minutes) are $145 with Shayan Khademi or Georgia Bates and $165 with Andrew Thompson at our Ipswich clinic ($145 with Andrew elsewhere). Complex initial appointments (60 minutes) are $190. Reviews are $95 with Shayan or Georgia and $105 with Andrew at Ipswich ($95 elsewhere). Read the full private patient details

Can I use my private health insurance and Medicare for the same appointment?

No, one or the other. Medicare via an EPC plan gives a higher rebate per session but caps you at 5 sessions per calendar year; private health extras has no session cap but lower rebates. We can help you work out the best mix.

Conditions we help with

Do you help with IBS and low FODMAP?

Yes. Andrew holds Monash University Low FODMAP Diet accreditation, the gold standard for IBS dietary management. We walk you through the elimination, reintroduction and personalisation phases so you don’t end up stuck on a restrictive diet. We also help with general gut health, IBD (Crohn’s and ulcerative colitis) and undiagnosed digestive symptoms.

Do you help with eating disorders?

Yes. Georgia Bates, our eating disorder dietitian, supports adults and adolescents with anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa (as part of a treatment team), binge eating disorder and disordered eating, and children and families with ARFID and feeding difficulties, working alongside your GP, mental health clinician and family. Sessions are by telehealth Australia-wide or at our Logan clinic by appointment, booked by phone or enquiry form. Read about our eating disorder support

Can a dietitian help with type 2 diabetes?

Yes. We work on blood sugar control, carbohydrate awareness, weight management where relevant, medication interactions and sustainable eating habits, and coordinate with your GP, endocrinologist and diabetes educator.

Do you support people taking GLP-1 medications?

Yes. We help with side effects like nausea, preserving lean muscle, getting enough protein and keeping nutrition quality up during rapid weight loss, alongside your prescriber.

Do you provide enteral nutrition and tube feeding support?

Yes. Andrew has extensive experience with enteral nutrition, including blenderised tube feeds as a food-based alternative to commercial formulas. We work with NDIS, NIISQ, DVA and private patients on PEG, PEJ, NG, NJ and gastrostomy feeding. Read the NDIS service details

Do you do paediatric and family nutrition?

Yes. Georgia Bates works with ARFID, selective and fussy eating, feeding difficulties and neuroaffirming care (including autism), and Andrew works with paediatric tube feeding. We also see families for food allergies and general nutrition, with a non-restrictive, weight-inclusive approach.

Do you help with weight management?

Yes, at your own pace and on your own terms, without restrictive diets or weigh-in pressure. We work on sustainable eating patterns, your relationship with food and any medical conditions that affect weight, and coordinate with GLP-1 medication if that is part of your plan.

Can you help with malnutrition or unintentional weight loss?

Yes, and early intervention matters, especially for older adults and people recovering from illness or surgery. We screen for malnutrition, find the causes and build a plan with food fortification, supplements and meal planning that works in your home. Read more about nutrition for older adults

Do you support people with dysphagia or texture-modified diets?

Yes. We follow the IDDSI framework and work alongside speech pathologists so meals are safe, enjoyable and nutritionally adequate, for stroke, Parkinson’s, dementia, head and neck cancer and aged care.

How it works

How do I book my first appointment?

The easiest path is a free 15-minute discovery call. Book online, call 07 5616 6549 or email info@thompsondietetics.com.au. Appointments with Georgia Bates are booked by phone or enquiry form.

What is a discovery call?

A free 15-minute phone or video conversation, with no paperwork or commitment, to understand what’s prompted you to look for a dietitian, check we’re a good fit and explain the relevant funding. If you already have your referral or plan sorted, you can book your first appointment directly.

How much does it cost?

A 45-minute initial consultation is $145 with a Dietitian (Shayan Khademi or Georgia Bates) and $165 with our Senior Dietitian, Andrew Thompson. Reviews are $95 and $105. A complex 60-minute initial consultation is $190. Until January 2027 Andrew charges the Dietitian rate at Logan, Redlands, home visits and telehealth. Medicare, DVA, NDIS, NIISQ, ADF, Support at Home and private health insurance cover the cost partly or fully, and we confirm your expected cost before your first appointment. See our fees page.

What should I bring to my first appointment?

Any GP referral or care plan, a list of current medications (or photos of the labels), recent pathology results, your private health fund card if claiming through extras, and a rough sense of a typical day of eating. Don’t worry if you don’t have all of these.

Will you write to my GP or care team?

Yes, with your consent, after the initial assessment and after any significant change in your plan. For NDIS, NIISQ and DVA patients we also write to your support coordinator, planner, OT or speech pathologist as relevant.

How many appointments will I need?

It depends on what you’re working on. A low FODMAP elimination is typically 3 to 5 appointments over a few months. Chronic disease or complex care is usually monthly or every 6 weeks for a year or more. We’ll discuss this at the first appointment.

What is your cancellation policy?

We ask for 24 hours’ notice for cancellations or reschedules. Less than 24 hours’ notice or no-shows may incur a fee. Call or email as early as you can if something comes up.

Are you accepting new patients?

Yes. We have no waitlist, and most new patients are seen within 1 to 2 weeks.
